Topics of the event
This workshop aims to exchange ideas and plans between high level representatives of the SEERA-EI project partners and third parties and other ministerial representatives from the region and to disseminate the project results and the regional infrastructure to media and society at large. Specifically, this workshop gathers and exchanges information regarding current e-Infrastructure programmes, and carries out a discussion and analysis of the state-of-the-art. Goals and actions for near-term, medium-term and long-term collaboration will be established.

Policy makers involved – target audience
The workshop brought together 44 high-level representatives from ministries & national agencies of 10 South East European countries, amongst whom were 3 vice-Ministers and a number of Ministerial councillors and heads of executive departments, and became the platform for exchanging ideas and enabling cooperation towards the formulation of the e-Infrastructures strategy for the region. The European Commission representative, Information Society and Media Directorate-General GÉANT & e-Infrastructures, as well as representatives of National Research and Education Networks and National Grid Initiatives were also present. Representatives of the IT and general media from Bulgaria were also present.

Project-related topics discussed and contribution to project goals
This workshop was the central regional dissemination event for the first project period and it achieved high impact by bringing together high-level representatives from the project partners who advanced the issue of increasing the coherence and reducing the fragmentation in the design and implementation of e-Infrastructure programmes. The best practices (study cases) of each country were presented and provided ideas for improving the other partners’ programmes.
During the discussions, special emphasis was given on the significant impact of the joint technical activities that have taken place in the field of e-Infrastructures in SEE over the past 6 years. The participants agreed on the importance of formulating a joint vision and adopting a common regional agenda, based on shared experiences in supporting and funding e-Infrastructures on the level of individual countries. By the end of the workshop, policy makers had agreed on working together towards this vision and the joint action plan of cooperation, as specified in the Distribution of Work of the SEERA-EI project

Overall impact of the event from SEERA-EI perspective
The exchange of ideas during the workshop contributed to enhance the collaboration and to improve each partners’ national programmes by adopting practices that others were presenting. The detailed presentation of the results of the questionnaire and the following discussion were of great importance for each partner to understand where they are with respect to the others and to fine-tune the prioritization of the various aspects of their e-Infrastructures.
The event also contributed to disseminate the idea of e-Infrastructures to the Bulgarian IT specialists and the general population.
The regional open workshop outreached the following common statement of the parties to wider audience in Bulgaria and Greece by means of press releases and publication in more than 10 specialized ICT-newspapers, magazines and websites:
The participants, with the focus on programme managers of the ministries and agencies of the region:
- recognize the impact of joint technical activities in the SEE region over the past 6 years.
- agree on the importance of formulating a joint vision and strategy for the region, based on shared experiences in supporting and funding e-Infrastructures on the level of individual countries.

In the workshop there were presented past and current eInfrastructure activities in South-East Europe, on the regional level, in context of pan-European initiatives. It was further discussed the SEERA-EI project context, objectives, activities, and results for the first project year.

Overall impact of the event from SEERA-EI perspective
SEERA-EI National Dissemination Workshop provided an open forum for information exchange, in order to enable coordination of R&D national programmes in eInfrastructures, and to set the framework for a common regional agenda. Information regarding current programmes in Greece was gathered and a set of best practices and guidelines for national eInfrastructure programmes were presented as examples for developing policies and tools aiming at the integration of the Southern-Eastern Europe Region R&D systems in the European Research Area.

"South-East European eInfrastructures: programming and vision" Working towards a Common Vision and Sustainable Cooperation in South East Europe

Regional vision and long term cooperation for the development of sustainable eInfrastructures in South East Europe were the main topics that were discussed at the SEERA-EI Open Workshop "South-East European eInfrastructures: programming and vision". The event was held with great success in Sofia, Bulgaria on May 12th, and it was organized in the framework of the EC funded SEERA-EI (South East European Research Area for eInfrastructures) project.
