The General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), of the Ministry of Education, Life Long Learning and Religious Affairs , is the main public body for the administration of the Greek R&D system. Concerning South Eastern Europe, among others, GSRT prepared the ‘EU – Balkan countries Action Plan for S&T’, an initiative of the Greek Presidency of the EU, which has been adopted in Thessaloniki Summit, in June 2003. GSRT is actively participating in the SEE-ERA-NET project, implementing the WP5 which is directly connected with the implementation of the Pilot Joint Call. GSRT is one of the key partners (WP4 leader) in the WBC-INCO-NET project and WP2 leader in the SEE-ERA-NET-PLUS project. Since 2000, especially with Balkan countries, GSRT had funded almost 250 bilateral joint research projects with a total budget of 3.5 million euros.
GSRT, through its national programmes, strongly supports national-level eInfrastructure activities in Greece, as implemented by GRNET. The current "GRNET3" project aims at establishing a new national robust network based on dark fibre technologies. The project is overseen by GSRT, under the auspices of the Ministry of Development, and has been funded by the Greek Information Society Operational Programme in the context of the 3rd Community Support Framework CSF (the budget allocated for the development of the new hybrid network is approximately 33.5m€, out of which a vast amount is dedicated to the leasing of the fibres). The HellasGrid national Grid Infrastructure project is also overseen by GSRT, under the auspices of the Ministry of Development, and has also been funded by the Greek Information Society Operational Programme (order of magnitude of 1.8Meuro public funding). Furthermore, stimulus to Grid applications in Greece has been provided by the GRID-APP call for projects run by the GSRT, which funded 9 projects to use HellasGrid (order of magnitude of the programme 0,5M euro).
